Fine line tattoos are small and delicate, so placement and size matter more. Typical sizes for wrist, collarbone, ankle, spine and more.
Fine line tattoos use thin needles and minimal shading. They look delicate — and that is exactly why size and placement decide how well they age.
Typical sizes
| Placement | Typical width |
|---|---|
| Inner wrist | 3–6 cm |
| Behind the ear | 2–4 cm |
| Collarbone | 6–12 cm |
| Ankle | 3–7 cm |
| Spine | 15–40 cm tall |
| Forearm | 5–12 cm |
Rules of thumb
- Leave space between lines. Lines spread slightly as they heal. Gaps under about 1 mm can close up over the years.
- Letters need height. Keep lowercase letters at least about 5 mm tall.
- High-friction spots fade faster. Hands, fingers and feet see more wear; your artist may suggest bolder lines there.
- Curves change the look. Collarbone, ribs and spine bend the design — preview it on a photo of your body.
